Today I attended the Barcamp in Dornbirn (#bcd09 ). It was the first barcamp I ever attended. For sure it was big fun and I am sorry that I was not able to attend both days. It was quite funny how I learned about this camp. During a stay in Domaso at the Lago Como I met Sacha Schlegel one of the organizers of the barcamp. During a nice evening at the Gelateria he invited me to join the barcamp and to have a session on Geocaching.

Well, and so I joined the barcamp today and had a session on geocaching. About ten people attended and we had a very interesting talk. For those of you who are interested I have put my presentation on this page.
Link to the presentation (in German): geocaching @ barcamp dornbirn

Other Session I attended:

“Open Community Networks” by Alexander List
A very interesting session on the build up of community wireless networks which are built up based on private broadcast knots based on technology such as private 5 GHz RF links. A good example for such a private broadcast network is the Funkfeuer Graz. Alex also stated that the build up of a fibre optic networks in urban areas will be key for Austria to stay competitive. A good example for a private fibre optics network www.blons.net.

“Co-working & Hacker Spaces” by Christopher Clay and Eric Poscher
An example for such a space is the Metalab in Vienna. The Metalab combines a electronic lab, an audio lab and many other rooms for different kind of activities – it is something like a social permanent barcamp. Co-working space is for example provided by the net culture lab in Dornbirn (Bertolinihaus). The Net culture lab in Dornbirn is now used as office space. Actually a new location is searched. Hacker Spaces is more focused on hobby, free thinking activities. The Common work spaces are more used for entrepreneurs with fixed working tables which can be rented on a monthly basis for 150,- to 200,- Euros. the Hacker space finances the rent from the membership fees and the selling of drinks (sodas). For a hacker space a certain critical mass is required to ensure that it can happen. Hacker Spaces are a mixture of social contacts, innovation and fun. To me it looks like Co-working spaces and Hacker spaces are like two worlds with some common targets. An example that combines elements from both worlds is the citizen space in San Francisco.

The page was no longer centered

This time I was a little more careful blaming Wordpress. You might remember – last time I thought there are problems with 2.6.5 – but I was wrong the latest Filezilla version I had a bug and was not able to upload more than two directory hierarch levels at a time.

Yeah after checking out the respective forums I learned more and found out that the problem was k2 related. Luckily the latest nightly (Feb – 12 ) did fix the problem. But it had a nice side effect. Suddenly the page template “Default with comment” was no longer supported and resulted in a crash of my Project V96/07 page.

Again it took some time before I learned that I had to switch back to the default page template (w/o comments) and had to activate the comments with a custom field.

… as allways … I was punished for touching a running system

Everything would be so easy. Just Upload the files, make sure that your wp-config File is still in the root directory. And your page is up ans running. Well, except if you are using Filezilla 3.1.5.1 because this version has problems with uploading the entire File Trees. It uploads first and second level folders but nothing below and this causes strange behaviors when you access your Wordpress page.

It is really a pitty, that I thought that wordpress is the reason for the problem. But who would ever expect such a bug in Filezilla. Nevertheless it seems that the problem has been solved in the latest nightly of Filezilla. (They show the ticket as fixed in their bug tracking system).

Let’s start with the upside first:

The upgrade did work nicely – I uploaded the new files and the webpage still worked.

BUT two things bothered me quite a lot and finally made me change back to Wordpress 2.6.4:

The first thing was that it was no longer possible to sort the active Widgets by drag and drop – I head to remove widgets and add them in the correct order to overcome this problem.

The active navigation of my K2 template did no longer work.

I posted both problems in the respective forums and I hope that I will get help soon – until then I will stick with 2.6.4 – which works great for me.
